Following
the signing of the Unification Treaty in 2,452 AD, most global trade
barriers were lifted, but states initially retained their internal
economic organization. The South African Technate was organized on
a strictly technocratic, centrally-controlled model, the South
American states operated on mixed public/private models, while New
Zealand and most of the emergent new states operated on loose, mostly
private models.
Over
the next several centuries, global economic organization was slowly
homogenized by a mixture of natural economic forces and UN policy.
The basic global model was a mixed public/private system, in which
the UN owned and operated the increasingly automated agricultural,
mining, and manufacturing facilities, while private entities competed
in services and the field of design, research, etc.
Individual
consumers received a monthly stipend from the state, in addition to
any salary from private employment. Physical goods would be
purchased electronically from a state factory. The factory would
produce the good, and credit funds to the originator of the design or
technology used in making it. Although this required an extremely
sophisticated and agile manufacturing architecture, Second Golden Age
industrial technology was equal to the task.
